Description
The former Parish Church manse, dated 1808, is a substantial two-storey and attic building with a rectangular plan and three bays. It is located on the site of a 1760 manse, overlooking the Sands of Tong towards Stornoway. The manse features a later porch with a piend roof, possibly designed by Charles Howitt in 1852. It was altered to a farmhouse in 1855, with renovations to the interior and the removal of fireplaces in the 1950s. The building includes a nepus gable and a full-width lean-to outshot at the rear, and is harled with deep-set openings.
The symmetrical principal elevation faces southwest and has a boarded timber door with a lionhead brass doorknocker on the right side of the porch, along with a small flat-roofed extension on the left. There are two small piended dormer windows that rise almost from the wallhead, flanking a small cast iron centre rooflight. The rear elevation features a nepus gable above a first-floor window, with both windows slightly left of centre; the ground floor is obscured by the later lean-to outshot.
Inside, the manse retains some fine early details, including moulded cornices, six-panelled architraved doors, and panelled reveals. The sitting room has a segmentally-arched recess with fluted timber pilasters and key detail, while the timber staircase features plain timber balusters. The porch has a flag floor, and the other ground floor areas have concrete floors.
The windows are largely timber sash and case with a four-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with Easdale slates, and the harled stacks have thackstanes and simple clay cans.
The gatepiers are harled, with pyramidally-coped square sections.
