School Block And Hall, Springfield Road, Stornoway, Lewis

The School Block and Hall on Springfield Road in Stornoway, Lewis, was built in 1907 by the Nicolson family, as noted on an inscription on a recessed block. This school features a symmetrical two-storey main block with a tripartite neo-Tudor/Jacobethan front elevation, showcasing large mullioned and transomed windows. The building is clad in imported rock-faced brown ashlar with contrasting yellow ashlar dressings and has a green slate roof that is piended and U-shaped, topped with an attractive domed lantern and finial. The roof is finished with red ridging tiles and retains its original small-paned glazing. The flanks, which contain entrances, are harled with a rock-faced plinth and ashlar dressings. To the left, a porch links the main block to a deeply recessed hall range, which has a gabled front featuring a central door and rooflights above the eaves of the harled flanks. The plain playground walls are topped with simple iron railings.
