Description
St Margaret's, located at 4 Duke Street in Fochabers, is a house likely built in 1838, possibly designed by architect William Robertson, and incorporates an earlier core. This two-storey, four-bay house faces west and features modern harl with tooled ashlar dressings. The entrance is off-centre with a hood-mould and is set in a slightly advanced gabled bay. The first-floor front windows break the wallhead under pronounced gablets. There is a later painted wooden oriel window in the first floor of the south gable, and both ground and first-floor windows are present in the north elevation facing Castle Street. The windows have eight-pane horizontal glazing, except for the oriel which has three-pane casements.
The house has an ashlar base course, a rear gabled stairwell, and coped end and shaped rear wallhead stacks, topped with a Banffshire slate roof. The rear walls feature a walled enclosure that is mainly made of rubble, with some brick replacements.
Additionally, there are stables, also attributed to William Robertson and likely built in 1838. These stables are a single-storey and loft range constructed of rubble and partially harled, featuring a centre wallhead gable with a window and multi-pane glazing, and a Banffshire slate roof.
