Description
The Dovecot at Quarrywood dates from around 1600 and is almost square, measuring 17 feet by 16 feet 3 inches (5.18 by 4.95 meters). It is constructed of harled rubble with ashlar margins and dressings. The west gable features a blocked entrance to the dovecot with chamfered margins, and there is a single air vent in each gable. A deep rat course runs along the wallhead, continuing across the gables.
The building has crowsteps and a heavy stone slab roof, which is supported by the gable walls and two masonry vaulted arches. A central ridge cupola is also made from stone slabs. There is a later dormer entrance added around 1905, and two metal bands have been installed to strengthen the walls.
Inside, no nesting boxes remain, and the interior is lined with mortar, which serves as a water cistern.
