Description
The Dovecot at Culloden House dates from around 1788 and is a tall octagonal structure built of pinned rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. It features a central entrance on the south side with an oval oculus above. There are three gablet dormers with timber fronts, each containing 17 flight holes and alighting ledges, located at the southeast, south, and southwest sides of the building. A rat course encircles the dovecot between the lintel below the oculus, and the base course includes long and short angle detailing. The roof is facetted with slate and topped with an apex finial.
Inside, there are approximately 630 regular stone nesting boxes arranged in a consistent formation, starting about 3 feet from the ground. A central potence tree stands on a circular stone plinth that is slotted into a crossbeam at the upper end, although no ladder survives.
