Description
The stables at Culloden House date from around 1788 and are a single-storey structure featuring a wide seven-bay range. The outer bays on the east and west elevations are slightly advanced and have pediments. The building is constructed of pinned random rubble with a harled pointed north return gable, and it has tooled and polished ashlar dressings.
On the east elevation, the central bays are arcaded and are fronted by a Roman Doric screen. There is a central arched entrance flanked by blind bays that have lunettes. The outer bays contain carriage entrances leading to the carriage houses, also with lunettes. The roof features five small piended dormers, and the right pediment displays the Forbes arms. The west elevation mirrors the arcading seen on the east front and includes a band course at the springing of the arcade and below the loft windows.
Originally, the stables had a piended platform roof, but it has been removed since 1985. Additionally, there is a semi-circular high rubble wall that encloses the yard in front of the west elevation.
