Description
Quarrywood House, built by William Robertson between 1840 and 1841, is a symmetrical two-storey, three-bay house. It features modern harl with tooled and polished ashlar margins and dressings. The central entrance has a corniced ashlar doorpiece and is approached by three shallow steps. The ground floor has long windows, with regular two-window fenestration on the east and west gables, some of which are blind. The ground floor window on the west has been altered to a glazed door, while the original margined 16-pane lying pane timber sash and case windows remain. The first-floor windows were replaced in 1995 to match the originals. The house has margined coped end stacks and a piended slate roof.
There is a two-storey rear extension added around 1965, featuring a flat roof and an entrance that is masked by a modern glazed porch. A single-storey wing was extended to form a billiard room in 1995, and there is also a piended glazed conservatory to the west, also added in 1995.
Inside, there is a replacement 18th-century chimneypiece with composite mouldings that was added in 1995. The house and garden are enclosed by mid to late 18th-century rubble stone walls with tooled ashlar or rubble copes. A pair of mid-19th-century low gatepiers flank the entrance, and a lean-to rubble laundry and outbuildings are attached to the garden wall at the rear of the house.
