Description
Spynie Parish Church, built between 1735 and 1736, is a simple T-plan church with a long south-facing elevation featuring four bays. The structure is made of rubble with contrasting painted ashlar dressings, some of which have been reused from a former church.
The southwest entrance is substantial and pointed-headed, with moulded reused jambs. To the southeast, there is a smaller square-headed doorway with deeply moulded reused jambs that are placed upside-down, with the run-off stops pointing upwards and positioned close to the lintel instead of at the base. Above this doorway is a small window with deeply chamfered margins that cuts through an obscure dated cill. A small mural sundial on the church is dated 1740. The centre Minister's door is blocked and flanked by enlarged windows, and there is a later enlarged round-headed window in the north gallery. The church features both four-pane and multi-pane glazing.
At the west gable apex, there is a bellcote dated 1723, which marks the date of construction, and 1735, indicating when it was moved to New Spynie. The bell, cast by Michael Burgerhuys, is dated 1637. The church has slate roofs.
Inside, the T-plan layout remains original, with raised and fielded panelled galleries on the east and west sides. The demi-octagonal raised and fielded panelled pulpit is centrally located on the south wall and features a reeded pilastered backboard and a corniced tester. The pews are simple, made of grained board, and include some of the 'box pew' type.
The church is enclosed by a simple rubble wall, with the entrance flanked by plain gatepiers.
