Description

31-33 Cove Road in Gourock is a group of four double villas built in the later 19th century, featuring classical architectural details and outhouses at the rear. The buildings are constructed from variegated sandstone with an ashlar front and coursed rubble on the rear and sides. They have base courses, a frieze, and an eaves cornice, with pilastered and corniced doorways, except for Nos 37-39, which only have corniced doorways. The windows have ashlar mullions.

The front elevations of Nos 31-33 and 40-42 are symmetrical with five bays and regular fenestration, featuring doorways flanking the central bays, panelled doors, and plate glass fanlights. The outer bays have bipartite windows, and there are canted and rectangular dormers. Nos 34-36 and 37-39 have ground floor bipartite windows in the centre, with doorways flanking and windows positioned off-centre above. The outer bays also have bipartite windows, and canted dormers are present. Nos 34-36 have a rendered front, a large modern box dormer, and a small garage extension on the outer left.

The east and west elevations are gabled with apex stacks and feature some small windows. The rear elevations include curved rubble-built stairs leading to first-floor doorways with decorative iron railings. There are small single-storey piend-roofed outhouses, and the windows are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing, although many have been replaced. The roofs are slate with apex stacks.

The interiors were not seen in 1993. The boundary walls consist of low ashlar walls at the front and taller rubble walls on the sides and rear, featuring semi-circular coping.
