Description
The Western North Lodge, part of Dunrobin Castle, comprises a pair of 18th-century stables and a carriage house, together with later entrance lodges. These buildings flank the north entrance to the castle.
The stables and carriage house are single-storey with attics, arranged in an L-plan. Each has a bowed bay facing the drive, featuring a central window and a bowed slate roof. They are built of cherry-pointed ashlar, with polished ashlar dressings. The west block includes a three-bay dwelling with three round-headed dormers rising through the wallhead, and an advanced carriage house wing with two tall round-headed carriage house entrances and a round-headed centre dormer. The east block contains a three-bay stable wing, a central door, and an advanced wing with paired outer doors and a central window; the dormers are similarly detailed. The windows have 12 panes, with some incorporating intersecting astragals. Details include long and short angle detailing, eaves bands, corniced ridge stacks, lead roofs to the dormers, and slate roofs elsewhere.
Two early 19th-century, square, two-storey, single-bay tower entrance lodges are positioned symmetrically. They are constructed of harl pointed rubble with ashlar dressings. They feature corniced and crenellated wallheads, entrances facing the driveway, hoodmoulded windows in the north and south elevations, and 8-pane sashes. A single wallhead stack is present on each lodge. A later square lodges block now screens the stable and carriage house bowed bays, which would have previously served as lodges.
Plans of the square lodges are held within the National Library of Scotland (Department 313/3618).
