Dunrobin Mains Farmhouse, Dunrobin Castle

This is a pair of two-storey cottages, dating from the later 19th century, located at Dunrobin Mains, near Dunrobin Castle. They were originally built as a pair of cottages but are referred to as Dunrobin Mains Farmhouse and Keeper’s Cottage. The cottages are harled, with tooled ashlar margins and dressings. The advanced and crowstepped outer bays are prominent, and the Keeper’s Cottage (the eastern cottage) features a shallow ashlar transomed and mullioned bay window on the ground floor. Each cottage has a projecting gabled porch. Three finialled dormers rise through the roofline in each house. Surviving lattice pane glazing can be found in the Keeper’s Cottage. The chimneys are corniced, and the roofs are slate-covered. Single-storey gabled wings extend from the east and west gables of each cottage. A front rubble retaining wall, with an ashlar cope and spearhead railings, encloses a paved terrace in front of the cottages.
