Description

The railway station waiting room at Dunrobin Castle, built in 1902 by L. Bisset, is an example of the Arts and Crafts style, demonstrating a revival of timber frame construction. The single-story building has three bays and a projecting, bargeboarded canopy supported by rustic, bracketed wooden columns. Further decorative features include rustic barge boards and ornamental wooden finials. The tripartite windows, featuring multi-pane glazing in the upper lights, flank the central entrance door and fill the end gables. A corniced stack is centrally positioned, and the roof is covered in slate. The building’s barge boards and gable end finials are also decorative. Internally, the station features two pine-lined waiting rooms. The Sutherland Railway was established between 1870 and 1873 and was associated with the Duke of Sutherland. The station appears as a "private station" on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1873. The building is referenced in John Hume’s The Industrial Archaeology of Scotland (1977), page 317.
