Description
The monument to the 2nd Duke of Sutherland, erected in 1866, comprises a bronze statue set upon a polished marble plinth. The plinth itself stands on a rusticated and stepped base, featuring an inscription. The statue is located opposite the north entrance drive, terminating an avenue, and is positioned within the grounds of Dunrobin Castle. It was erected by the Duke’s tenants. Designs for gardens around the statue were prepared by George Devey in 1866, although the execution of these designs may have occurred earlier (likely around 1806) and were subsequently lost when the railway was constructed between 1870 and 1871.
