Description
This is a complex of stables, a carriage house, and entrance lodges, dating from the later 18th century, situated at Dunrobin Mains, near Dunrobin Castle. The stables and carriage house are paired, flanking the north entrance. Each building is single-storied with an attic, arranged in an L-plan. The carriage house features a bowed bay facing the drive, with a central window and a bowed slate roof. Both buildings are constructed of cherry-pointed ashlar with polished ashlar dressings.
The western block incorporates a three-bay dwelling with three round-headed dormers rising through the wallhead, and an advanced carriage house wing with two tall round-headed carriage house entrances and a round-headed dormer at the centre. The eastern block contains a three-bay stable wing with a centre door and an advanced wing with paired outer doors and a central window; the dormers are similarly detailed. The windows are predominantly 12-pane, with some featuring round heads and intersecting astragals. Noticeable features include long and short angle detailing, eaves bands, corniced ridge stacks, lead roofs to the dormers, and slate roofs elsewhere.
A pair of mirrored square, two-storey, single-bay tower entrance lodges were built in the early 19th century. They are constructed from harl pointed rubble with ashlar dressings, and feature corniced and crenellated wallheads. Hoodmoulded windows are present in both the north and south elevations on ground and first floors, and the windows are 8-pane sashes. Each lodge has a single wallhead stack. Later square lodges now obstruct the view of the stable and carriage house bowed bays, indicating they previously functioned as lodges. Plans of the square lodges, undated and unsigned, are held at the National Library of Scotland (Department 313/3618).
