Description

The stable block and carriage house, dating from the later 18th century, are located at Dunrobin Mains, flanking the north entrance to Dunrobin Castle. The buildings are arranged in an L-plan, with single-storey and attic sections. A bowed bay facing the drive features a central window and a bowed slate roof. Both blocks are constructed of cherry-pointed ashlar with polished ashlar dressings.

The west block includes a three-bay dwelling with three round-headed dormers rising through the wallhead, and an advanced carriage house wing featuring two tall round-headed carriage house entrances and a round-headed dormer above. The east block contains a three-bay stable wing with a central door, and an advanced wing with paired outer doors and a central window; the dormers are similarly detailed.

The windows are largely 12-pane sashes, some with round-headed tops and intersecting astragals. Features include long and short angle detailing, eaves bands, corniced ridge stacks, lead roofs to the dormers and slate roofs elsewhere.

A pair of mirrored, early 19th century, square, two-storey, single-bay tower entrance lodges stand nearby. They are constructed of harl pointed rubble with ashlar dressings, corniced and crenellated wallheads. The entrances face the driveway, and the north and south elevations have hoodmoulded windows on both the ground and first floors, with 8-pane sashes. Each lodge has a single wallhead stack.

A later square lodges block now obscures the stable and carriage house bowed bays, which previously served as lodges. Plans of the square lodges are held within the National Library of Scotland (Department 313/3618).
