Description

The Eastern North Lodge, relating to Dunrobin Castle, comprises a complex of stables, a carriage house, and entrance lodges dating from the later 18th century, with additions in the early 19th century. The stables and carriage house flank the north entrance and are arranged in a paired L-plan layout, each with a single storey and attic. They feature bowed bays facing the drive, incorporating a central window and a bowed slate roof. The buildings are constructed of cherry-pointed ashlar with polished ashlar dressings.

The west block includes a three-bay dwelling with three round-headed dormers rising through the wallhead, and an advanced carriage house wing with two tall round-headed carriage house entrances and a round-headed centre dormer. The east block contains a three-bay stable wing with a central door, and an advanced wing with paired outer doors and a central window; the dormers are similarly detailed. The windows are largely 12-pane sash windows, some with intersecting astragals. Other detailing includes long and short angle detailing, eaves bands, corniced ridge stacks, lead roofs to the dormers, and slate roofs elsewhere.

Two mirrored, early 19th-century square, two-storey, single-bay tower entrance lodges are positioned to either side, constructed of harl-pointed rubble with ashlar dressings. They have corniced and crenellated wallheads; entrances facing the driveway; hoodmoulded windows in the ground and first floors of the north and south elevations; eight-pane sashes, and a single wallhead stack to each. These later lodges block the outlook from the stable and carriage house bowed bays, which evidently previously functioned as lodges. Plans of the square lodges, undated and unsigned, are held within the National Library of Scotland, Department 313/3618.
