Description

Phoineas House is a country house dating back to approximately 1740, with a central block added around 1800. It is arranged as an "H" plan house, built over a raised basement. The exterior is harled, with margins and dressings in tooled and polished ashlar. The central doorway is emphasised by a Roman Doric doorpiece, approached by shallow, splayed steps with a simple cast-iron balustrade. A double-leaf panelled door leads into the house, above a fanlight with ogee tracery. A continuous cillband links the tripartite window above the doorway to the flanking windows. Another bandcourse runs around the house below the ground floor windows. The central bay to the rear is slightly advanced, featuring a deep, full-height bowed bay with tripartite windows on each floor. Various additions project at basement level. The house has 12-pane glazing, a cornice and blocking course, and a piended platform slate roof with paired centre stacks, and single centre stacks to the wings' roofs.

Inside, a small entrance lobby leads to a stairhall, from which rises a cantilevered staircase with slender decorative cast-iron balusters and a polished wooden handrail. The dining room has an inlaid marble chimney-piece and a decorative ceiling cornice. The first-floor drawing room occupies the full width of the central block, featuring a Doric columned screen and a carved white marble chimney-piece. Simple moulded door architraves are present with either fielded panelled (circa 1740) or beaded panelled (circa 1800) doors. The house suffered a fire after the 1745 rebellion; the wings were less affected.
