Description

An early 19th century range, forming a large hollow square, which originally comprised stables and a steading and is now partially converted into dwellings. The building is single-storey with a loft, and the north and south elevations are slightly higher than the east and west. It is constructed of cherry-pointed rubble with tooled and polished ashlar dressings.

The symmetrical south front has nine bays, with the outer and centre bays slightly advanced. A tall, round-headed archway sits at the centre, leading to an inner court. To the right of the archway is a three-bay dwelling with a central door, and to the left a three-window block. All windows are set in shallow, round-headed ashlar recesses, with small loft windows above. These are linked by cill bands, with the central loft window being smaller. Tall, round-headed arches, formerly housing carriage houses, are in the outer bays. These are now partially blocked; to the left is a multi-pane window to a dwelling, and to the right are double-leaf garage doors.

The west range has been converted for residential use and features centre glazed French windows sheltered by a piended verandah supported by a pair of Roman Doric columns, flanked by square-headed windows. The rear (north) elevation has two doorways, slit vents and loft openings.

Within the court, an entrance to a west wing dwelling features a door piece incorporating re-used balusters to support a cornice, with flanking windows set in former stable doorways. Multi-pane glazing is used throughout, with dummy intersecting glazing to the south front ground floor windows. Corniced and panelled ridge stacks rise from piended slate roofs. Some modern garages are located within the inner court.
