Description

This is an early 19th century building, a large hollow square that originally served as stables and a steading, and has since been partially converted into dwellings. The building is constructed of cherry-pointed rubble with tooled and polished ashlar dressings.

The southern elevation has nine bays arranged symmetrically, with the outer and central bays slightly projecting. A tall, round-headed archway dominates the centre, leading to an inner courtyard. To the right is an original three-bay dwelling with a central doorway, and to the left, a three-window block. All ground floor windows are set within shallow, round-headed ashlar recesses with small loft windows above, linked by cill bands; the central loft window is smaller. Tall, round-headed arches, formerly housing carriage houses, are in the outer bays, now partly blocked. One bay now contains a multi-pane window, while another contains double-leaf garage doors.

The western range has been converted for residential use. The centre features glazed French windows sheltered by a piended verandah supported by a pair of Roman Doric columns, flanked by square-headed windows. The rear (northern) elevation has two doorways, small slit vents, and loft openings.

Within the courtyard, the entrance to a west wing dwelling incorporates re-used balusters to support a cornice, with windows set within what were formerly stable doorways. Multi-pane glazing is present throughout, with dummy intersecting glazing to the south front ground floor windows. The building has corniced and panelled ridge stacks and piended slate roofs. There are modern garages within the inner courtyard.
