Description
Keppoch House is a house dating from around 1760, with alterations and additions made later. It is a two-storey house with an attic, built over a raised basement, and has three bays. The exterior walls are harled. The central doorway is accessed by a flight of steps added in the 19th century, which overhangs the raised basement and is sheltered by a later 19th-century gabled porch. The porch has a doorway flanked by long sidelights and a bracketed cornice above. The ground floor windows on either side of the porch have been enlarged into bipartites. Dormers featuring a canted shape were added in the 19th century on the outer bays.
At the rear, a shallow projecting stairwell with a piended slate roof is visible. Most windows contain two panes of glass, although some with twelve panes remain at the rear. The house has coped end stacks and a slate roof. A long, single-storey extension with an end stack projects at the rear and incorporates a large, slatted garage door.
The house is situated near the site of the former Keppoch Castle, the seat of the MacDonells of Keppoch. It stands on the land where a previous house was destroyed by fire during the 1745 rebellion, and subsequently rebuilt as the present dwelling. Donald MacCulloch’s book, Romantic Lochaber, published in 1939, discusses the property on page 149.
