Description
The Commando Memorial, designed by Scott Sutherland, ARSA, and produced by H.H. Martyn & Co. of Cheltenham in 1951, stands on a prominent rise above Spean Bridge and the Great Glen, an area utilized for Commando training during World War II. It comprises a square, bull-faced granite plinth set on a stepped base, which supports three tall bronze figures depicting Commandos in battle dress. The monument is situated on a simple paved and stepped platform. An inscription reads: "United we conquer. In memory of the officers and men of the Commandos who died in the Second World War, 1939-1945. This country was their training ground.” The site's significance led to its upgrading from a Category B listed building to a Category A listed building on 15 August 1996. The listing record was updated in 2023 to acknowledge the contribution of H.H. Martyn & Co. of Cheltenham to the monument's creation.
