Description
This is a three-arched rubble bridge built in 1737, constructed under the direction of General Wade. The bridge, known as General Wade’s High Bridge, crosses the River Spean near Spean Bridge. It is a significant example of 18th-century infrastructure.
The bridge features segmental arches faced with dressed rubble. Triangular cutwaters rise as stepped buttresses at each end of the abutments. A smaller arch survives on the east bank, and remnants of a cast-iron footbridge, which previously spanned the missing sections of the bridge, are present, though this section has now collapsed. Fragments of a pulvinated string course survive on the structure.
Historically, General Wade’s High Bridge was superseded by Thomas Telford's Spean Bridge, which was built further upstream. An inscription, reportedly still present, reads: "In the ninth year of His Majesty King George II this bridge was erected under the care of Lt General Wade, Commander in Chief of all Forces in North Britain, 1736."
The bridge is currently in poor condition, and examination is difficult due to its deteriorated state and overgrown vegetation.
