Description
Spean Bridge Station and Signal Box, attributed to James Miller and built around 1894 with later additions, is a single-storey, 12-bay station designed in the Swiss Chalet style. It features a long rectangular plan with a bell-cast roof that extends to form a canopy, complete with glazed end screens. The building has a painted base course and a red brick plinth, along with moulded timber and door margins.
On the south elevation, the station displays irregular fenestration, including a combination of 4-light canted windows, bipartite windows, and timber-panelled doors. The walls between the openings are adorned with scalloped timber shingles. There is a round-arched former ticket window and another round-arched window on the east gable elevation. The north elevation, facing the road, has late 20th-century rendered gabled additions flanking a central timber and glazed porch.
The windows are predominantly timber framed with 2-light glazing panels in the upper sections. The roof is covered in grey slate, with rendered ridge tacks and red clay cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, and fixed cast-iron weighing scales can be found on the platform elevation.
Inside, the station has been sympathetically converted for use as a restaurant since 1993, while retaining original features such as fireplaces and dado-height panelling.
The signal box, built in 1949 to a 1945 design by the London and North Eastern Railway, is located to the east of the station. It has a square plan and is constructed of red brick with chamfered corner angles. The signal box features metal frame windows with glazing bars in both lower and upper sections, along with a projecting cill. A dog-leg stair with a tubular metal railing leads up to a recessed timber panel door on the west elevation. The flat leaded roof has an overhanging canopy, and there are two horizontal openings on the rear elevation.
