Description

The barn, dating to circa 1750, is a tall, single-story structure built over a raised basement. It has symmetrical east and west elevations, each spanning nine bays. The exterior is constructed of whitewashed rubble with dressed tooled rubble details.

The west elevation features a central, segmental-headed doorway flanked by four long, narrow round-headed windows with alternating, paired slit vents, one above the other. The upper course of these windows originally served as openings for a loft. A window in the outer north bay has been enlarged to create a doorway, while a square-headed doorway provides access to the raised basement in the outer south bay. The east elevation displays a similar window arrangement and vents, although the central round-headed doorway is somewhat smaller.

The ground slopes away significantly on the east side, allowing the raised basement to be accessed via various square-headed doorways. A doorway in the outer north bay on the east side likely served a former kitchen. Paired round-headed loft windows are visible in the north gable; blocked slit vents are present in the south gable, some now masked by a later gabled addition. Brick end stacks rise from the slate roof.

The interior has had its loft ceiling removed, creating a single large space with a raised timber floor at the southern end. A large, gabled-end mural fireplace is a feature of the northern raised basement chamber. It is believed the barn was previously used as barracks, and the raised basement may have functioned as a kitchen and stables. Evidence of a horsewalk threshing mechanism is visible within a large circular mound in the northwest corner. Existing fenestration has been altered over time.
