Description
St Margaret's Church was built in 1929 by Reginald Fairlie, replacing an earlier chapel at Mulroy, near Roybridge. The church is a simple rectangular plan with a projecting, angled chancel at the east end and a square tower to the southwest, which incorporates a small entrance porch at its base. The exterior is constructed of grey granite rubble, with carefully cut granite dressings, and some contrasting pink sandstone ashlar dressings. A round-headed entrance is set into the base of the tower, above which is a niche containing a statuette. The upper stage of the tower is set back and has three small, louvred vents on each side, topped by a bellcast pyramidal roof with a ball finial and projecting eaves. Four narrow, pointed-headed windows are set into the south elevation, divided by buttresses; the north elevation has similar fenestration. The west gable features a round-headed tripartite window. The chancel is lit by linked, round-headed lancet windows high in the south and north walls. A projecting gabled vestry is located at the southeast corner, connected to the adjacent presbytery. Clear, leaded glazing is used throughout, and the roof is slate, angled eastwards.
The church’s interior is simple, with a timber ceiling. The chancel is framed by a polished ashlar round-headed arch supported by engaged, faceted columns with plain capitals, which leads to a ribbed, octagonal, polished wood saucer-shaped ceiling with a central pendant. The building remains in use as an ecclesiastical building.
