Description
This is an aqueduct, built circa 1815 by Thomas Telford, carrying the River Loy beneath the Caledonian Canal. The aqueduct comprises three parallel tunnels, approximately 260 feet long. The central tunnel has a segmental headed arch ring, while the outer tunnels feature round-headed arches. The outer tunnels serve as pedestrian and animal passages, and also function as flood arches when needed. The aqueduct is flanked by high, semi-circular abutments constructed from squared and tooled rubble, topped with tooled rubble copes. Tooled ashlar arch rings are present, along with triangular cutwaters, which have been refaced on the south side with cement rendering. The roadways within the aqueduct are paved with stone cobbles and provide access to fields and farmland situated between the Caledonian Canal and the River Lochy. The aqueduct was statutorily addressed in 2020, and was previously listed as ‘Caledonian Canal, Acqueduct over the River Loy’.
