Description

Torcastle Aqueduct, constructed around 1815 by Thomas Telford, forms a significant part of the Caledonian Canal. It comprises three parallel tunnels, each roughly 240 feet long, designed to carry the waters of the Allt Sheangain in two parallel channels beneath the Caledonian Canal. A third tunnel provides a roadway.

The aqueduct is characterised by high, semi-circular abutments built from squared and tooled rubble, topped with tooled rubble copes. These abutments flank the canal bank and each support three round-headed tunnel entrances, distinguished by triangular cutwaters. Both the water channels and roadway are paved with oblong sections of ashlar stone. The roadway serves as access to Torcastle and other buildings, situated between the River Lochy and the Caledonian Canal. The statutory address was revised in 2020, reflecting a change from the previous designation of ‘Caledonian Canal, Torcastle Acqueduct over the Allt Sheangain’.
