Description
The Howard Memorial, located at Loch Shiel, is a war memorial dedicated to Lieutenant The Hon. Philip G J F Howard, dated 1919. It was designed by Douglas, Minshull and Muspratt of Chester.
The memorial features a battered and panelled square plinth on a stepped base, which supports a tall cross with a raised border and a sword superimposed on the south face. The entire structure is made of polished ashlar. On the south-facing panel of the plinth, there is a bronze relief depicting the bust of a young man in a Welsh Guards' uniform, framed by a laurel wreath and a raised broken scroll border, with the sculptor's initials, HGF or HCF. The rear, north-facing panel displays the coat of arms of Howard of Glossop, while the side panels are filled with inscriptions. The memorial is surrounded by a simple cast-iron spearhead railing.
