Description

The war memorial, built in 1920, was designed by P. Morley Horder, with stonework by W. Whitehead of Royston and bronze figures by W. B. Fagan R.B.S. and Mr. Clemons of Clapton. It features knapped flint, handmade red brick, and Portland stone. The memorial is symmetrical, with a central pedimented aedicule and memorial tablets in stone, flanked by a curved brick and flint retaining wall topped with a deep stone parapet. The return walls, made of brick and flint, each have an apsidal niche with a continuous deep stone plinth, ending in paired brick piers with stone copings.

A stone-paved forecourt leads up to the memorial, with a central stone step from the pavement, enclosed by a low brick parapet wall with stone coping. The pedimented aedicule is topped with a stone cross. A carved stone panel depicts historical soldiers, including a bowman from Agincourt, an Elizabethan soldier, a Cromwellian ironside, a soldier from the Napoleonic wars, and Thomas Cartwright, a scholar from Royston. In front, there is a bronze figure of a World War I soldier and a bronze Royston crow. The pediment features a garlanded cartouche with a Hertfordshire hart, and the entablature is dated 1914-1918. The flanking panels and base are inscribed with the names of the fallen, and there is a panel at the front commemorating those who fell in 1939-1945.
