Description
The Toddington War Memorial is a war memorial built around 1921, with the architect unknown. It is made of Portland stone and features a short, wide column topped with a moulded cap and an orb finial, all set on a square base above a platform with two steps. The upper part of the column is surrounded by a finely-carved laurel wreath. The lower part of the column has a moulded oval cartouche adorned with palm leaves, which contains the inscription: TO / ENGLAND’S / HEROES / 1914 - / 1919, highlighted in black lettering. The front face of the square base is inscribed with a quote: THEIR SHRINES STAND ON EVERY HIGHWAY / WHOSE LAMPS OF REMEMBRANCE ABIDE / FED WITH LOVE FROM THE HEART-SPRINGS OF ENGLAND / AND LIT FROM THE TORCH OF HER PRIDE. This is an excerpt from James Rhoades’ poem ‘The Empire’s Heroic Dead 1914-1918’. The rear of the base bears the inscription: ERECTED BY / HUGH AND ISABEL ANDREWS / TODDINGTON. The area around the memorial is paved, and the broader setting includes a small garden with flanking walls, trees, and shrubs.
