Description

The Old Bakehouse is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th century and late 20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with rendered panels and English garden-wall bond brickwork on the left side. The roof is made of stone slate, while the right wing is constructed from roughly squared stone brought to courses with an artificial stone slate roof. The building has an 'L' plan layout and is 1.5 storeys high.

The main range facing the road has two bays, with a brick left return that includes a corbelled chimney projection rising partway up the gable. Inside, there is an exposed queen-strut truss and boards over the principal rafters. The front of the house has framing that is two panels high, all covered by boarding, and a low plinth. There is an elbow brace to the sill on the left side, a three-light mullion oriel window with a moulded sill and a lean-to roof, and a three-light casement window. A brace supports the wall plate, and there is a boarded door accessed by one stone step, topped with a triangular arch in a timber head. Above this, a gabled dormer features a three-light casement window, and there is an ashlar chimney on the ridge to the left of the door.

The right wing projects outward and has a boarded door on the left return, along with a four-light casement window that includes an original iron opening light, both with timber lintels. The gable features a three-light casement window on the upper floor with an iron opening light on a curved track, and there is a projecting iron bar for a sign with three stays. It is said that the right wing was the village bakehouse. The interior is not accessible.
