Description

Hailes Farmhouse is a farmhouse that may date back to the 17th or 18th century, but it underwent significant alterations in the early 19th century, along with later changes. The building is constructed from roughly squared, coursed stone and features a stone slate roof. It is arranged in a three-unit long and two rooms deep layout, standing one and a half to two storeys high, with a wing extending from one end.

The entrance front displays three gables in a continuous facade. At the left, there is a projecting chimney with offsets at the eaves and ridge levels. To the right of the chimney, there are two-light casement windows on each floor, featuring semi-circular heads and deep stone lintels, with a parapet gable above. A single-storey projecting ashlar porch has a three-centred arch with sunk spandrels, leading to a six-panel door; it also has a plain parapet and a flat roof. Above the porch, there is a similar window to the left, which includes a hoodmould and a parapet linking the gables above.

To the right of the porch, there is a three-light wooden mullion and transom window with semi-circular heads, sunk spandrels, and a hoodmould. Above this, there is a similar two-light window with a parapet gable and a cross-gablet apex. A narrow two-light window to the right has a plain parapet above that links between the gables. Below, there is a lower three-light window of the same style, with a smaller two-light window above it, a parapet gable, and a ridge chimney with cyma moulding.

The wall of the wing on the right continues from the main wall and features a stable door with a deep stone lintel, alongside a single three-light casement window with a timber lintel, and two similar windows above. The farmhouse may have originally been designed in a U shape, with a courtyard that was later infilled with a narrower gable.
