Description
Two chest tombs from the second half of the 18th century are located in the churchyard about 1 meter south of the east end of the chancel at Hailes parish church. Made of ashlar stone, these two adjoining monuments are identical in design. Each features a flat lid with a moulded edge and wide, rectangular pilaster ends that frame the sides. The northern monument has a bluish, slatey slab on its north side, while the southern monument has a similar slab on its south side, with adjoining sides featuring fielded panels. Both tombs have moulded tops to their bases. The inscriptions on the bluish slabs are partly weathered and include one dedicated to the wife of William Marshall, dated 179-, and another from 176-.
