Description
St John's Episcopal Church dates to 1810-16 and was reconstructed in 1879 by Alexander Ross. It is a Gothic-style building, oriented east to west, with a rectangular plan. A gabled porch projects to the southwest, and a small vestry is located to the northeast. The exterior is constructed from rubble with broached and stugged, or broached and droved, dressings.
The east gable features a slightly advanced central bay with a large three-light perpendicular traceried window. The lower half of this window is blind, and it is flanked by blind Y-traceried windows. A blind cusped window is set in the gable end, topped by a cross finial. The west elevation contains three simple geometric traceried windows, while the east elevation has two. The west gable incorporates two similar windows above a rose window, with a small double belfry above. Stained glass is housed in the east window.
Inside, the church features pine fittings and a font originally from St Andrew's Well Street, London. The church is enclosed by a drystone dyke. A parsonage and an old school are situated close by. It remains an ecclesiastical building in use.
