Description
Old Allangrange House is a tall, two-storey house with a raised basement and five bays, dating from 1760. The exterior is constructed of harled rubble with painted ashlar margins and ashlar dressings. The main entrance is in a slightly advanced central bay, accessed by a flight of steps that overhangs the basement. The door surround is rusticated with a keystone and a stone plaque displaying a coat of arms above. The door itself is panelled and features an intersecting traceried fanlight. A central first-floor window is distinguished by a bracketted cill, lugged architrave, and a moulded cornice, with a shaped wallhead gable incorporating an apex stack. An eaves band connects the lintels of the first-floor windows. The rear elevation displays symmetrical windows, most of which are blocked 12-pane sashes, with the exception of 6-pane sashes at basement level. The building has an eaves course, end stacks, and a slate roof. A date stone bearing large Roman numerals is located at the base of the central gablet chimney. A faint carving of the name "FRASER" is visible on the right-hand skewputt. Curved flanking wings, depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1868 and 1901, were removed in the early 20th century. The house is referenced in "The New Statistical Account” (1845) and "The Historic Architecture of Scotland" (1966).
