Knockbain Free Church

Knockbain Free Church is a Gothic style building dating from 1888, designed by John Rhind. It is a cruciform church with a porch located on the southwest side and a tower set into the southeast angle. A vestry and several associated buildings are grouped around the tower. The church is constructed from sneck coursed red rubble stone, with polished ashlar dressings of the same material. It features large triple lancet windows in each gable. The square tower transitions to an octagonal shape, topped with a louvred belfry and a facetted spire, which is crowned with a weathervane. The roof is slate. The building remains in use as an ecclesiastical building. The site was originally situated just within the boundaries of Killearnan parish. References to the building’s construction appear in the Inverness Courier of 13th March 1888, in advertisements for tenders, and in the journals Building News (volume 5, page 64, and volume 6, page 393).
