Description

Bellfield Farmhouse is an early 19th century Georgian style house, situated prominently above the Beauly Firth. The building has a T-plan layout, is two storeys high, and features three bays, with single storey wings on the south (principal) elevation. A distinctive bowed central bay with a conical shaped roof likely marks the original entrance.

The south-facing principal elevation consists of a two-storey main block with single storey wings to the east and west, and a long two-storey northern jamb at the rear. The central bay is double height and bowed, featuring a later tripartite window that probably replaced the original entrance. The conical roof of the bow is slated and piended to the roof of the main block. Windows are present at both the ground and first floors of the outer bays, with ashlar margins. The left bay has a mid-20th century window and door opening that replaced the original window. The main block has strip quoins that are now rendered. The flanking wings have tall tripartite windows, with a large picture window in the centre flanked by narrow outer windows, all featuring stone mullions and stone skews at the gabled ends. The rear has a long two-storey northern jamb with a random pattern of fenestration that includes many later changes and additions, along with stone skews at the ridge.

The interior has undergone significant changes in the mid-20th century, featuring a central timber staircase leading to the former entrance hall. Some banded cornicing and classical ceiling roses remain in the principal rooms on the ground floor, along with some original timber panelled window jambs and surrounds throughout the house.

The materials include possibly ashlar stone on the principal elevation, which is heavily rendered. Some original 6 over 6 sash and case windows are present on the principal elevation, while the remaining openings have mid-20th century replacement windows. The pitched roofs are piended to the main block and covered with grey Scots slate. There are ashlar ridge and gablehead stacks, with a projecting ashlar course at the head, concrete pointing, and rendered stacks at the rear. The building also features black mid-20th century cans.

An ancillary structure includes a round, random rubble well located on the lawn to the south of the principal elevation, aligned with the former axis of symmetry through the building.
