Signal Box, Clachnaharry Station, Inverness

The Clachnaharry Railway Swing Bridge, located over the Caledonian Canal in Inverness, was rebuilt in 1909 for the Highland Railway. It is a steel bowed box-girder swing bridge measuring 37.5 meters in length, featuring protective timber starlings on both banks of the canal.

Adjacent to the bridge is a signal box designed by Mackenzie and Holland for the Highland Railway, built in 1890. This two-storey structure has a rectangular plan and is weatherboarded with planks and strips, set on a brick base. It includes a timber forestair leading to a raised doorway in a projecting half-gabled porch. The signal box has continuous fenestration with 4-pane glazing on the track-facing side, which extends to the gables. The roof is made of tin, with projecting eaves and timber bargeboarding. Inside, there is a small mechanical lever frame with four levers labeled 'up', 'down', and 'bridge locks'.
