Description
Knockbain House is a large house dating to 1766, with significant repairs in 1791, alterations by George Rhind in 1842, and further additions and alterations by Alexander Ross in 1870. It is two storeys and has an attic, with three bays, a central doorway, and is constructed of red rubble stone with ashlar dressings. The central bay projects slightly and features a pediment. The doorway has been altered with later windows, and there are two small gablet dormers in the roof. A single-storey wing extends to the rear, and the building has end stacks topped with a slate roof.
A steading, also constructed in 1842, comprises a range of rubble farm offices with cartbays, a byre, and an enclosed yard, all covered by a slate roof.
The site of the former parish church stood nearby. Historical records, including the Statistical Account of 1794, newspaper advertisements from 1842 and 1870, document aspects of the building's history and development.
