Isobel Fraser Home Of Rest, Mayfield Road, Inverness

The Isobel Fraser Home of Rest, located on Mayfield Road in Inverness, was designed by Leslie Grahame Thomson in 1936. This building features a symmetrical, splay-planned block in a Traditionalist or post-Lorimerian Classical style. It has a white smooth-rendered exterior with small-paned casements. The structure includes flat-roofed low wings, one of which contains the main entrance, that splay out from behind a central two-storey block topped with a steep-pitched tiled roof. The upper windows are cut through the eaves. On the southwest garden front, there is a balconied doorway set in a shaped centre gable at the staircase half-landing. A conservatory, donated by Mr and Mrs James Allan, was added in 1959. The chimney stacks also reflect the post-Lorimerian style. Inside, the building is plain yet elegant, featuring full-length corridors and staircase newel posts with sculptured tops.
