Description

This is a 2-storey villa located at 28 Old Edinburgh Road in Inverness, believed to date from 1836 but possibly constructed in two main stages. It underwent later alterations in the 1900s, including the raising of a turret at the angle of the L-plan north (entrance) front to create a 3-storey campanile and the addition of a decorative timber porch. The building is primarily rubble-built with painted ashlar detailing, featuring bracketed eaves, slate roofs with red ridging tiles, and end stacks. The south (rear) elevation is simpler, having been altered and harled. Most of the original glazing has been replaced with unsympathetic options. The ground floor windows are flat-lintelled, with round arches above, except on the 2-bay east (garden) front, which has projecting ground floor window-bays from the 1900s that light twinned public rooms. Each room has a decorative chimney-piece and ornamental timber and plasterwork, while the windows above originally featured an unusual margined glazing pattern and are set into the eaves with barge-boarded gables. The interior is notably decorative, showcasing extensive timber work, including an entrance hall (likely modified in the 1900s) with an aedicule-framed chimney-piece, a staircase that is said to be re-aligned, and wall panelling, as well as leaded glasswork. The boundary wall to the street has a repositioned gateway due to the reduction in size of the associated garden area to the east.
