Description
The former chapel, part of HMP Inverness (formerly Porterfield Prison), dates from 1899 and opened in 1902, designed by the HM Office of Works with project architecture by J MacKintosh under W W Robertson. The prison complex, enclosed by a high boundary wall of red sandstone, includes the chapel alongside former male and female cell blocks, all constructed in the early 20th century. Later additions and alterations have been made to the buildings and site, with certain elements excluded from this listing including all other structures within the boundary walls, the entrance block, and the rebuilt southwest corner of the boundary wall.
The chapel itself is a three-bay, two-storey building constructed of squared and coursed sandstone with ashlar margins, a rock-faced band course, and a slate roof. It features round-arched, keystoned openings on the ground floor and pointed-arched openings on the upper floor. A deeply moulded machicolated eaves course runs along the top, and there are crow-stepped gables and a central crow-stepped bellcote. The upper floor of the former chapel originally had a coombed ceiling with plain timber roof trusses, although some later structures now occupy the space and few original features related to its chapel use survive.
Attached to the rear of the chapel is the former male block, now known as B Hall. This is a nine-bay, three-storey structure built of squared and coursed sandstone with ashlar margins, featuring a deep base course and machicolated eaves. Many of the window openings have been lengthened, and the original glazing has been replaced. A pair of large machicolated ashlar ventilation chimneys flank the slate roof ridge. The interior of B Hall follows a brick-built corridor plan with regularly spaced cells opening off each side. The design is simple and functional, with few architectural details, and the floors are supported by curved iron brackets.
To the west of the site, and connected to the former chapel by a 20th-century wing which is not listed, is the former female block, now known as A Hall. This consists of a two-bay, two-storey block with deeply overhanging eaves and a piended slate roof. Attached to its rear is a smaller cell block, similar to B Hall, spanning seven bays and two storeys, with a pair of ridge ventilators. At right angles to the east of A Hall are single-storey, slate-roofed former laundry and kitchen wings. A Hall presents similar detailing to B Hall but on a smaller scale, featuring a single row of regularly spaced cells on both the ground and first floors.
