Description
The Inverness United Charities Institution, located at 5 Culduthel Road in Inverness, was built between 1834 and 1836 in a classical style, with later additions and alterations by Alexander F. Mackenzie in 1902 and 1906. The original structure is L-shaped, featuring single-storey, three-bay arms that are connected by recessed one-bay quadrants to an oval block at the end of the L. This oval block is distinguished by a pedimented tetrastyle Roman Doric portico, which has been glazed, and is topped by an octagonal base that supports a pilastered and domed circular observatory tower with segmental-arched windows.
During the 1902-1906 renovations, canted bay windows were added to the front of each arm, and the east wing was raised to two storeys. At the rear, the open angle of the L-plan was filled with a two-storey block that is harled with ashlar dressings, featuring a slightly raised tower at the main entrance. Inside, there is an oval room that has been opened into the portico, which retains its original chimney piece from the 1834-1836 construction.
