Description

The Mackenzie Foundation School, built in 1863 by Ross and Joass, is designed in the Scottish Baronial style. It features an asymmetrical layout with the headmaster's house on one side and a lower school block to the east. The house is a tall, two-storey structure with an asymmetrical three-bay front. The left bay has an advanced crowstepped gable and a canted bay window, while the right side features a three-storey and attic crowstep-gabled tower. The second floor of the tower slightly projects on a continuous corbel course and has four steeply pedimented dormer heads at the attic, which once held clock faces. Above the entrance door at the base of the tower, there is an armorial plaque displaying the Mackenzie arms set in a stepped string course. The centre bay includes a lancet window at the ground floor with a tripartite stair window above it.

The school range has a cruciform plan, consisting of a single storey and attic, with a lower single storey crowstepped east arm. The south arm features a demi-octagonal end. The south dormer has two-light Gothic glazing, and there are large Gothic windows in the east and north gables, although the east window is partly blocked.

The building is constructed from coursed red sandstone rubble with pale polished sandstone dressings, and it is topped with a slate roof. Cast iron finials adorn the structure.
