Description
The Parish Church of Berriedale, built in 1826, is a standard Parliamentary T-plan church designed by Thomas Telford. It is constructed with harled walls and margins of tooled ashlar. The church features a pair of outer doors, with plaques above, though the southwestern entrance is now blocked. A later projecting gabled porch now hides the original southeastern entrance. The centre windows are paired, featuring depressed arched lintels, simple Y-tracery, and cast-iron lattice pane glazing. Similar window detailing is found in the east and west gables and the rear wing. A standard bellcote with stumpy finials sits atop the west gable apex, while the east gable features a trefoil finial. A low vestry addition has been added to the rear. The roof is slate.
The interior retains its original simple layout and contains no gallery. The church is situated within a drystone walled burial ground containing 19th and 20th century tombs.
A plaque above the southeastern entrance reads: "On the application of James Horne of Langwell who granted all the required Accommodation of Lands, etc GRATIS 1826." A plaque above the blocked southwestern entrance reads: “Erected by Commissioners of Parliament in 1826.” The church occupies the site of an earlier mission chapel. Berriedale became a Quoad Sacra Parish from 1846.
