Description

The Drill Hall and adjoining two-storey villa-like house, built around 1887 for the Seaforth Highlanders, is located on the site of the Custom House in Ullapool. The south-facing elevations on Custom House Street are constructed from stone, with a snecked finish at the front and rubble or rendered surfaces elsewhere, featuring ashlar detailing. The hall has arched openings and plate glass timber sash and case windows, while the house has modern uPVC replacements. The hall's three-bay south front includes a central double door flanked by windows and a central timber louvred opening above the door, topped by a segmental-arched corrugated iron roof.

On the long elevation facing Ladysmith Street, there is a door with two windows and a north lean-to. Inside, some walls are finished with timber tongue and groove, and the arched roof is supported by thin metal tie beams. The attached three-bay house mirrors the hall's arrangement, featuring a central door (uPVC with a timber effect finish) and flanking windows. The left bay has a curvilinear gable, while the right bay features a timber-corbelled oriel that breaks the eaves, both adorned with finials. The building has a pitched and piended slate roof with stone skews and prominent stacks, along with a rear single-storey lean-to extension.
