Sir John Fowler Memorial Clock, Argyle Street, Ullapool

Dated 1899, the Sir John Fowler Memorial Clock is a handsome cast-iron clock tower situated on Argyle Street, Ullapool. The structure begins with a square plinth, which supports a fluted column. Paired lamp brackets are positioned along the column. At the top is a Corinthian capital surmounted by a square, pedimented clock face, with a clock face visible on each side. The clock is topped with a terminal urn and a decorative weather vane. The memorial was erected in remembrance of Sir J Arthur Fowler of Braemore, who died on March 25, 1899, aged 44, and his son, Sir John Edward Fowler, who was killed in France in 1915. A separate memorial exists for the first baronet, Sir John Fowlet of Braemore, at Lochbroom parish church. The clock was likely manufactured by MacFarlane’s of Glasgow.
