Glendale Mill And Kiln, Glendale, Skye

Glendale Mill and Kiln, located in Glendale, Skye, is believed to date from the mid-18th century and was restored in 1972. The buildings are constructed from coursed and caulked, roughly squared rubble with thatched roofs. Some iron pins remain in the north gable of the mill, which were used to secure the thatch.

The mill is a simple rectangular structure featuring a wheel on the south gable, with its west wall built into the side of a hill. A straightforward wooden lade channels water to the overshot wheel, which powers the original machinery that is still in place.

The detached kiln has its west wall also built into the slope. Two-thirds of the interior is occupied by the kiln, which stands about 8 feet high and is made of rubble. It includes a ground floor vent for the fire and is topped with a perforated iron kiln plate. A small square chimney, which has been renewed, is located to the north, and the kiln is capped with a piended thatched roof.
