Description
Ironmacannie Mill is a grain mill that originated in the later 18th century, with most of the existing buildings dating from the 19th century. The mill has an L-shaped layout and features a kiln at the eastern end, constructed from whinstone rubble. The windows are primarily located on the southern elevation, which overlooks Shirmers Burn, and consist of single-light sharp arrised openings, some fitted with fixed-frame 6-pane glazed windows. The roofs are made of corrugated iron.
At the eastern gable, there is an iron overshot waterwheel situated in a rubble wheel pit. The timber sluice mechanism is decaying, and the lade has been diverted away from the wheel. Additionally, there is a smaller cast-iron wheel on the southern side of the kiln, which used to power the kiln bellows.
Inside the mill, much of the machinery remains intact, including the gearing for three sets of stones housed in their original wooden casing and sack hoists. The kiln is also nearly complete, retaining its iron fire-proof door and some perforated tiles from the drying floor.
