Description
Ken Bridge is a five-arch granite bridge designed by John Rennie, built between 1820 and 1821. It spans the River Ken and features a curving roadway at the boundaries of Balmaclellan and Kells parishes. The bridge is symmetrical, with five graduated segmental arches, the central arch having the widest span of approximately 100 feet and an overall span of about 350 feet. The masonry is made of rock-faced granite, with polished granite soffits and the inner face of the parapet. It has round-nosed cutwater piers on the river bed and pilasters at the spandrels. A bull-nosed string course runs along the base of the parapet, and the abutments are splayed.
